[Spoilers] BoSJ Night One (5/10) Results

Taiji Ishimori, Robbie X def Katsuya Murashima, Ninja Mack — (5:27, Bone Lock)

  • Ninja Mack still doesn’t have a logo on his nameplate, so I’m assuming he still doesn’t fully work here.

  • War Dogs try to start the bark but it doesn’t catch on. Mack tries a “Ninja” chant which also doesn’t go much of anywhere.

  • Mack and Robbie start. Within a couple minutes we end up with our first outside brawl of the night. X steals Mack’s overmask.

  • It’s kind of funny to see War Dogs working heel after leaning so heavily face in the HoT feud. Which Dogs lean which way may be something worth paying attention to in advance of Finlay vs EVIL.

  • Post-match, Robbie tries to rip the overmask but fails and ends up stomping it instead. He brings it to the back with him.

  • Mack vs Robbie tomorrow, along with Ishimori vs Taguchi as the main in the town that Guch is a tourism ambassador for.

Master Wato, Ryusuke Taguchi, Kevin Knight def Shoma Kato, Tiger Mask, MAO
— ( , Tsutenkaku German Suplex)

  • Seeing Tiger Mask walk out to MAO’s theme is pretty funny.

  • This is Kato’s return from ankle injury at the end of January, and he demands to start. Wato decides to oppose him.

  • If you don’t watch AEW, Kevin has been pushed pretty hard. He’s beatable, but is probably not taking too many Ls.

  • MAO tagging in gets a pretty good reaction. He works with Kevin, ahead of their match tomorrow.

  • Wato gets the win ahead of his match with Clark Connors tomorrow. While he’s leaving, he’s so focused on fanservice that he whacks the back of his head on the camera.

Toru Yano, YOH def Hartley Jackson, Robbie Eagles — (8:20, roll up)

  • Pre-match, YOH and Robbie have a bit of a standoff. This leads to them starting us off.

  • They do a little bit of kiss-related comedy, which leads to YOH smooching Yano on the arm to tag him in. Yano and Hartley do some comedy.

  • In the closing moments, my stream stuttered and then Yano was pinning Hartley. I’m sure it was a completely clean pin with zero illegal tactics involved.

  • Post-match, YOH and Robbie banter and bicker once again ahead of their match tomorrow. As he’s leaving, YOH pops his pec directly in the camera and then gives the lens a kiss.

  • With this tournament, Robbie matches Prince Devitt/Balor for most BOSJ entries by a foreigner.

BOSJ B Block: Nick Wayne def SHO — (10:43, Prodigy Plex)

  • Nick Wayne seems to have found Shota’s old coat and tights and thrown them on. (I made this joke based on the look, but then his pants kept riding down all match.) He’s been leaning face on AEW lately so I expect he’ll work that way for most of the tourney.

  • SHO has a mic. He congratulates Nick on his first BOSJ and gives him a present; one of SHO’s towels which states in Japanese that he’s a country bumpkin. SHO does his “fuck this hick town and everyone from it” schtick, then invites Nick to introduce himself.

  • Nick takes the mic, clears his throat, and gets jumped. After Yasuda gets pulled in to negate a Wayne dive, we get an outside brawl.

  • SHO targets Nick’s left arm, which ends up getting a small cut on the elbow.

  • HoT Shenanigans level: present but surprisingly low.

BOSJ A Block: Dragon Dia def Yoshinobu Kanemaru — (10:51, Reptillian Rana)

  • Nobu jumps Dia while he’s making his entrance. Is targeting the left leg.

  • HoT Shenanigans level: present but surprisingly lower than SHO.

BOSJ A Block: Kosei Fujita def Francesco Akira[w/JAY] — (12:03, Thrill Ride)

  • Great match. Go watch it. Fujita’s new finisher is nice.

BOSJ A Block: Hiromu Takahashi def KUSHIDA — (13:03, Maximum the Holding Second Form [named by Daisuke Han] )

  • In advance I had typed out “insane to not see the LIJ logo next to Hiromu’s name or hear it in his entrance,” but KUSHIDA of all people decided to jump him before Hiromu even made it to the ring. But yeah ICYMI LIJ is confirmed dead and Hiromu is factionless (though he’ll still be teaming with Shingo and Tsuji in some preview tags on this tour).

  • Good shit, another one to watch.

  • Post-match, KUSHI briefly has words with Hiromu and then goes to the outside to chat with Kevin Knight, who’s been on English comms.

BOSJ B Block: El Desperado def Titan — (14:10, Numero Dos)

  • With LIJ’s dissolution, Titan has been downgraded to “from CMLL.”

  • They shake hands before starting.

  • More good shit that you should watch.

  • Show closing promo by Despe. In Spanish to start, speaking directly to Titan. Then Titan leaves, and in Japanese Despe seems to relay what he’d said to him: Despe isn’t usually one to linger on the past, but his previous two losses (at least one by submission) to Titan weighed on him and he’s glad to have beaten him. He’d like to wrestle Titan again, maybe even with the Junior title on the line; whether it be in Japan or Mexico.

  • BOSJ is a hard tournament and really everyone; younger, older, champion, or not; starts out on even footing so every win is important. Despe has a lot of pride for being NJPW born and for being a masked wrestler, but he’s only won one tournament while his rival; Hiromu; has won four— so Despe has some catching up to do. There’s a lot of great things going on with this tournament, but at the end it’ll be Despe with the flag and trophy.

  • As he leaves Despe finds Titan’s entrance mask and puts it on the back of his head; in a respectful way.

  1. Thought it was a good start to the tour and about as well structured a card as it gets with two house of torture matches back to back.

Obviously that’s another one of the many crimes of njoa getting the blocks out of order.

    Last three matches really good

  2. Both Taguchi and Ishimori were born in Miyagi prefecture, but Taguchi was born in Iwanuma, where the event will be held tomorrow.

  3. that was a great palate cleanser after earlier today. hiromu hitting bushi’s codebreaker was GREAT too…..i’m predicting a destino from him later in the tournament

  4. Good shit. Love the BOSJ.

Nick Wayne had a good debut.
Dia getting a win is a good start to right last year’s wrong.
Fujita v Akira match of the night.
Non-LIJ Hiromu is weird to see.
    Despe is the best.

  5. Thank you for recommending those last 3 matches, I would’ve just resigned myself to missing today but goodness me I enjoyed the shit out of them

  6. u/EffingKENTA I hope this was a solid palette cleanser for you from the NJOA show last night. Appreciate all the work you put in for us dopes.

  7. This was a fun show and refreshing after having watched Resurgence. Fujita vs Akira was MOTN and Fujita’s new finisher is great. I think he takes A Block and I wouldn’t mind a TMDK vs TMDK final or even Fujita vs Ishimori or even Despy (with Despy getting the win back at Dominion). Could be the last chance for two-time finalist—Ishimori—to win the tournament. He deserves it but the youth movement is here in NJPW and Wato, Akira, Fujita, and Connors have been stepping up.

Also, thanks for writing these! I was a lurker for a bit but these write-ups I always checked out. Made me want to make an account.

  8. With how much they’re pushing that LIJ is dead, I’ve got a strange feeling that at least Shingo and possibly Hiromu turn heel over the next couple months. I could maybe see Shingo joining the War Dogs with his hard hitting style, but I’m less sure about Hiromu, especially with the wars he’s had with Ishimori in the past.

  9. Besides everything mentioned here, in REALLY excited for tomorrow’s Ninja Mack v Robbie X match. If what we saw tonight showed us anything, we could be in for the second coming of Ospreay v Ricochet tomorrow 😆

  10. Just curious if anyone happens to know why there were no guard rails for the first night? I’m catching up on it right now and it’s bugging the hell out of me.
