[Spoilers] G1 Climax 35 Night Seven (7/27, A Block) Results

No Aaron Wolf at ringside as far as I could tell. So yeah he’s sticking to select shows for now.

Jado, El Phantasmo def Jakob Austin Young, Great-O-Khan — (8:03, CR II)

  • Post-entrances, ELP tries to get the crowd to make noise for him but it doesn’t really work until he gives a cheeky “konnichiwa!”

  • ELP does some comedy and shittalking with JAY, who calls Jado an “old man,” then GOK indicates he wants to start with his next G1 opponent. ELP accepts, then tries to get a pre-lockup crowd poll going; again to middling results.

  • After a brief sequence, the crowd chants loudly for O-Khan.

  • Pretty good. Towards the end Jado helped ELP towards the end in a way that was arguably a little heelish; by grabbing GOK’s leg and pulling him out of the ring.

  • Post match ELP stands on the turnbuckle to taunt GOK for a minute. As he’s leaving he does some fanservice and gives his TV title to a young fan.

Katsuya Murashima, Shota Umino def Daiki Nagai, Shingo Takagi — (7:07, Boston Crab)

  • Shota stops to give away his bracelet during his entrance.

  • Murashima and Nagai are eager to start against each other.

  • Again pretty good. Shota had Shingo trapped on the outside, but he still tried to encourage his YL protege to escape the Crab. Nagai just hasn’t progressed enough to behest his Senior YL yet.

Taiji Ishimori, Drilla Moloney def Yoshinobu Kanemaru, Ren Narita — (6:32, Gedo Clutch)

  • HoT strike while Drilla is posing on the turnbuckle. Very brief brawl where Ren takes Drilla into the crowd, then Nobu gets Ishimori in the ring to start; though Ren is right there for quick tags/double teams.

  • At one point Ren mockingly barks at Drilla and the crowd chuckles. A couple times after that Drilla tries to get the crowd to bark but it’s not super successful (so potentially just a weird crowd tonight, though I do think Ren was a little more over than Drilla here).

  • A botched clothesline(?) spot sees Ren’s elbow connect above Drilla’s left eye. It doesn’t bust him open, but in the immediate aftermath Drilla thought it did because he checked in with the ref for a sec.

  • HoT Shenanigans level: Pretty mild, and it cost them.

  • Post match, Drilla taunts Ren from the ramp and Ren (uncharacteristically) takes the bait, but is held back by YL. He does get free, but then decides against going after the Dogs.

Hartley Jackson, Zack Sabre Jr. def
Rocky Romero, KONOSUKE TAKESHITA — (9:01, Death Valley Bomb)

  • Zack and TAKE basically get right in each other’s faces. TAKE is the one to start the shoves that separate them, but then Rocky pops in and starts taunting Hartley so they end up starting.

  • Again pretty good. Rocky and Hartley was fun, with just enough ZSJ and TAKE to get you excited.

  • Post-match, Zack has TAKE wrapped in the octopus hold and guardrail. The YL pry him away after a minute, Zack does a lap around ringside to get his title, then comes back to briefly sit on the rail and taunt TAKE.

  • Zack makes to the curtain, but TAKE is now up and coming towards him; so he goes back down the aisle to have a staredown.

G1 A Block: Yota Tsuji (6 pts) def Boltin Oleg (6 pts) (point totals from before today’s results) — (10:03, Gene Blaster)

  • Quick start with a big bicycle kick by Tsuji.

  • Quite good, but also a little disjointed and messy. During the ending sequence they fucked up the big spot that was supposed to be Tsuji countering a second rope Kamikaze(?) with a hurricanrana, and did seem to both get a little rattled by it.

G1 A Block: Callum Newman (2 pts) def David Finlay[w/Gedo] (2 pts) — (10:32, Hurricanrana pin)

  • Callum hits a dropkick before Finlay can take his coat off. This leads to a big outside brawl.

  • Very good.

  • Post-pin, Finlay immediately gets up and starts arguing with the ref about, and is very obviously very upset. He boots Shoma Kato in the stomach and takes his anger out on some barricades as he leaves.

  • Callum takes a long time before he starts moving, and continues heavily selling the damage done to his back during the match as he leaves.

G1 A Block: SANADA (2 pts) def Taichi (4 pts) — (15:05, Pin)

  • Taichi is in fact worthy of a SANADA fashion moment: the white/neon yellow Freddie Mercury at modern Coachella fit.

  • As soon as he gets on the ring, Taichi starts brawling with SANADA.

  • Honestly pretty good from a feud/character level, and thus worth watching. So much so that I’ll spoiler tag some details in case you want to go in relatively blind.

  • HoT Shenanigans level: very high. Nobu showed up. We also got some big payoff to the ongoing Milano spot, with him helping Taichi toss SANADA into the announce area as revenge (which gets a massive pop and “Milano” chant); as well as some development in Yasuda being taken under Taichi’s wing.

  • Both SANADA and EVIL have now pinned the one tag Champ in the tourney.

  • Post match, Yasuda gets in SANADA’s face, but is quickly taken out by he and Nobu.

G1 A Block: Yuya Uemura (4 pts) def EVIL[w/Dick Togo, Don Fale] (6 pts) — (13:42, Deadbolt Suplex Hold)

  • EVIL attacks Yuya pretty much as soon as Uemura gets in the ring.

  • HoT Shenanigans level: high.

  • Yuya Uemura is Him.

G1 A Block: Ryohei Oiwa (4 pts) def Hiroshi Tanahashi (4 pts) — (14:20, THE GRIP [right to the fucking mouth])

  • Oiwa’s right elbow is taped up.

  • Tana’s next G1 win, should he get one, will be his 100th. This is something that’s been acknowledged by NJPW, so they may have booked his tournament run with that in mind.

  • Pre-lockup crowd poll is maybe 80/20 Tana, but definitely not 100%. We are in Oiwa’s home prefecture of Aichi.

  • Great. Oiwa’s getting a much-needed stock raise from the tourney so far.

  • Oiwa promo: “Tanahashi, please wait.” (Tana does) “This was our first singles match together. I loved it. I had so much fun, this made me glad to become a pro-wrestler. Are you really finished in six months time? If you want to wrestle Oiwa again, if you thought for a second this was a match worth having, I will gladly wrestle you again any number of times.”

  • For a moment, Tana sits against the bottom rope and watches Oiwa finish his promo.

  • “Nagoya, thank you for coming here and showing support. Everyone's support has become my power. I do my best in this ring to help you let out all your stresses and frustrations and I'm so happy to do so. I'll keep getting stronger, and when I come back to Nagoya you'll know that it was Ryohei Oiwa who took a Grip on the G1!”

  • Oiwa goes around ringside and up the aisles doing fanservice before leaving.

  1. Huge victory for Uemura, I’m thinking he’s almost a lock to make the playoffs at the very least.

Equally so for Oiwa, he’s starting to put it all together. With a few more signature wins he’ll be a star.

  2. Main event Oiwa win and man he looked right at home during it

Yuya and Yota continue to stake their claim as the future aces of New Japan

    Future looks hella bright

  3. Weakest night of the tournament so far, with no matches I’d recommend watching if you missed them, but Tsuji vs Oleg and Tanahashi vs Oiwa were both good.

Uemura is so clearly Him, man. He is that guy.

  4. I can’t see Finlay NOT making the comeback honestly. But because he’s facing Uemura on the final day, I think that means Uemura doesn’t make it through, as much as I’d like for him to. EVIL is probably the other guy making it through, no way he’s not spoiling Tanahashi.
