PSA: The next show is an early one, 11pm on the 25th for PST and 2am on the 26th for EST.
We once again open with Gabe Kidd’s music. He’s in street clothes but not on crutches. Chris is already in the ring to translate.
Gabe is now officially out of the G1. Promises he’ll come back “the best Gabe Kidd you’ve ever seen” and appreciates all the support he’s gotten from fans; right now is aiming to be back for Forbidden Door on 8/24. As of now he is still Global Champ, but keep an eye out for possible updates on that.
Everyone who was still to wrestle Gabe gets 2 free points via forfeit, and tonight’s card is down to 9 matches. Exact card changes on all other shows TBD.
Jakob Austin Young, Great-O-Khan def
Shoma Kato, YOSHI-HASHI — (7:40, Jakob’s Ladder)
-
GOK postures up to YH, and they start us off.
-
Fine little opener.
-
Post match GOK and YH exchange some brief words. JAY talks shit to the camera as they leave.
Aaron Wolf is here as a ringside YL for the first time.
Jado, El Phantasmo def
Hartley Jackson, Zack Sabre Jr. — (6:37, Jackknife pin)
-
ELP and ZSJ shit talk a little before starting.
-
Again a nice little match. ELP is playing up comedy a little, but also his technical game to compete with Zack.
-
Post match, ELP and ZSJ compare titles and talk some more shit.
Yoshinobu Kanemaru, Ren Narita def
Tomoaki Honma, Shota Umino — (7:07, pin)
-
Shota grabs the camera and smiles into it while making his entrance. Wolf is the YL who holds the ropes open for him, which NJPWWorld’s Twitter made sure to point out.
-
For a minute it looked like we’d get a clean start with Shota and Ren, but then Nobu jumps Shota from behind.
-
HoT Shenanigans level: moderate. Finish was probably the best Push-up Bar shot Ren’s ever given, shout-out to Honma who I assume encouraged it.
-
Post match, Ren continues to beat down Shota with Nobu keeping the YL from stopping him. Ren goes for a Bar shot, but Shota dodges it and throws a lariat, which Ren dodges then bails out of the ring.
Rocky Romero, KONOSUKE TAKESHITA def
Daiki Nagai, Shingo Takagi — (7:32, cross armbar/Diablo Armbar)
-
Nagai taunts Rocky a little, but it’s Shingo and TAKE who start.
-
Pre-lockup crowd poll is 90-100% Shingo.
-
Pretty good. Unaffiliated-affiliated Nagai has even more piss and vinegar, just not yet the skills to back it up.
-
Post match Shingo and TAKE have a quick face off. Rocky hypes up TAKE to the camera before they leave.
G1 A Block: Boltin Oleg (4 pts) def
SANADA (2 pts) (point totals from before today’s results) — (9:57, Kamikaze)
-
Silver Surfer SANADA today, with some $ shades.
-
SANADA jumps Boltin during his entrance announcement.
-
HoT Shenanigans level: mild; outside brawl/Milano spot. Once again the “old SANADA” stylings cost him; a second Shining Wizard was caught by Oleg and transitioned into Kamikaze.
G1 A Block: Yuya Uemura (2 pts) def
Callum Newman (2 pts) — (10:32, Deadbolt Suplex Hold)
-
Callum boots Zane Jay off the apron so he can’t hold the ropes open for Yuya. Then he shoves Yuya once he gets in the ring. Yuya quickly sheds his coat and we’re off.
-
Very good.
-
Post match, Yuya somewhat condescendingly gives Newman his ice pack. They have a little staredown as Callum leaves.
G1 A Block: EVIL[w/Dick Togo, Don Fale] (4 pts) def
Taichi (4 pts) — (10:31, Reverse EVIL)
-
During EVIL’s entrance, Don Fale comes from behind and attacks Taichi. They also attack Yasuda, who Taichi’s recently taken a shining to.
-
HoT Shenanigans level: Moderate. Finish was clean, though.
-
They teased the Inoki vs Hogan KO finish, but Fale got EVIL back in the ring.
-
Post match, a weary Taichi tries to attack EVIL but is thwarted by Dick.
G1 A Block: Yota Tsuji (4 pts) def
Ryohei Oiwa (4 pts) — (13:43, modified Toque)
-
Blue Tsuji today.
-
Really good shit. Great finishing stretch.
-
Post match, Oiwa argues a little with the ref and Tsuji about the sudden finish. They have a long staredown and then Oiwa shoves Tsuji, who decides to just leave the ring.
G1 A Block: Hiroshi Tanahashi (2 pts) def
David Finlay[w/Gedo] (2 pts) — (16:02, Rollup)
-
During Tana’s entrance, Finlay stands his ground and keeps staring him down.
-
Pre-lockup crowd poll is at least 95/5 for Tana.
-
Pretty good. Felt a little weird to me for some reason, but full disclosure I’m a little tired right now so it might be one I like better on the re-watch.
-
Post match, Finlay is shocked and briefly argues with the ref. Before he leaves he says he was “this close” and wants to face Tana one more time.
-
Pretty basic Tana promo about this being his last G1. Teases leaving before the “Aishitemasu,” but comes back in and we get the air guitar for the first time in a long while. Then another short closing promo and “Aishitemasu.”
