[Spoilers] G1 Climax 35 Night Thirteen (8/7, A Block) Results

Jado, El Phantasmo defbShoma Kato, YOSHI-HASHI — (5:35, CR II)

  • Pre-bell, ELP starts to do some comedy with Kato, but Kato calls out “crabby old man” Jado instead.

  • Fun enough. Korakuen loves the YL.

  • Post match has a very quick staredown between ELP and YH. ELP extends a hand but YH just leaves.

  • As he’s leaving, ELP briefly puts the TV belt on Aaron Wolf’s shoulder like he’s a fan. He then does the real thing with a young TMDK fan who completely no-sold it.

Hartley Jackson, Zack Sabre Jr def Taiji Ishimori, Drilla Moloney — (7:32, European Clutch)

  • Zack and Drilla start.

  • Very fun match worth watching.

  • Post match, Zack and Drilla get in a little chest-bumping spat/dick-measuring contest. Zack drops his title during it, and when he goes to pick it up Drilla steps on it, and they start going at it again.

  • Drilla starts leaving, but as he gets to the aisle-way they start yelling at each other from afar. Zack comes over to antagonize more, Drilla sits on some guy fan’s knee to tauntingly clap at Zack.

Yoshinobu Kanemaru, Ren Narita def Daiki Nagai, Shingo Takagi — (6:40, Boston Crab)

  • ICYMI, Chris Samsa led everyone astray and Shingo does still have a slim (one clean-broken tied points scenario) chance to make it out of the Blocks.

  • HoT jump mid-Shingo announcement. Ren and Shingo brawl up into the orange stands while Nobu and Nagai are in the aisle way.

  • Eventually Ren brings Shingo back to the ring, and is very briefly legal before tagging in Nobu.

  • HoT Shenanigans level: medium-high.

  • Post-match, HoT start to beat down Nagai but Shingo makes the save; which is what they wanted, as Nobu gets him with the whiskey mist and then Ren gets in a push-up bar shot.

Rocky Romero, KONOSUKE TAKESHITA def Tomoaki Honma, Shota Umino — (5:38, Plus Ultra)

  • Rocky kicks Zayne Jay off the apron so he can hold the ropes open for TAKE instead.

  • Shota is wearing a backwards black baseball cap with “Second Chapter” written in it that I do not think has been released for sale yet.

  • Shota fiercely calls out TAKE, but Rocky steps up instead. So Honma comes back in to start with him.

  • Post match, TAKE taunts Shota from the turnbuckle. Shota comes back in and they get chest-to-chest. TAKE pushes Shota away, then Shota starts throwing elbows. They start brawling all the way to the outside, then TAKE hits a Brainbuster on Shota on the wooden aisle way floor.

  • TAKE leaves, a bleary Shota is helped out by YL.

G1 A Block: Callum Newman[w/JAY] (6 pts) def Taichi (6 pts) (point totals from before today’s results) — (12:50, Prince’s Curse)

  • Callum paces around the ring as Taichi makes his entrance.

  • Pre-lockup crowd poll is pretty much 100% Taichi.

  • Callum asks Taichi in for a handshake. Taichi obliges, but Callum uses the opportunity for a cheap shot that starts a forearm battle.

  • A very good but IMO interestingly worked match. To me it kind of felt like Callum wanted to play both face and heel, but couldn’t really meld the two well like some can. At one point he non consensually depantsed Taichi, who in response ripped the KT tape off Callum’s back.

  • Taichi is now out of contention.

  • Next/Final Block Matches: Taichi vs Oleg, Callum vs Tsuji

G1 A Block: EVIL[w/Dick Togo, Don Fale] (8 pts) def Boltin Oleg (8 pts) — (9:44, EVIL)

  • Dick doesn’t come out with EVIL, which is so he can jump Oleg during his entrance. They bring him into the ring and hit Dick-to-dick before the excess Torturers leave and the match actually starts.

  • HoT Shenanigans level: HA HA HA. Oleg’s hope spots were kind of fun but otherwise it was in the lower tier of HoT matches.

  • Next/Final Block Matches: EVIL vs Tana, Oleg vs Taichi

G1 A Block: Hiroshi Tanahashi (6 pts) def SANADA (6 pts) — (2:48, flash pin)

  • SANADA enters through the orange stands in a black suit consisting of a cropped jacket with leather lapels and skinny jeans; both with adidas-ease stripes down the front and some kind of renaissance painting (ETA: per ToSpo it’s “The Calling of Saint Matthew” by Caravaggio, my apologies for mixing up a Baroque with a Renaissance) printed on parts of it. His knees clearly do not enjoy walking down the stairs.

  • Rare clean start for an HoT match.

  • Hot Shenanigans level: mid-high, considering the match length. Tana took the guitar shot right to the dome.

  • SANADA is now out, but more importantly Tana is still in.

  • SANADA briefly argues with the ref after the match but then just leaves. Tana’s next match is EVIL; I would think maybe he would’ve appreciated his stable mate doing some more work to help wear Tana out.

  • Tana is helped to the back.

  • Next/Final Block Matches: Tana vs EVIL, SANADA vs Oiwa

G1 A Block: Yuya Uemura (8 pts) def
Ryohei Oiwa (8 pts) — (18:23, Deadbolt Suplex Hold)

  • Pre-lockup crowd poll is maybe 60/40 in favor of Oiwa.

  • Pretty fucking excellent.

  • Post match, Yuya goes over and helps Oiwa to sit up and half-hugs him. They exchange some friendly words.

  • Next/Final Block Matches: Yuya vs Finlay, Oiwa vs SANADA

G1 A Block: David Finlay[w/Gedo] (6 pts) def Yota Tsuji (8 pts) — (15:21, Overkill)

  • They have a brief staredown before Tsuji (red version) poses on the turnbuckle for his entrance. Then another after the bell rings.

  • Pre-lockup crowd poll is probably 85/15 in favor of Yota.

  • As great as you’d expect, but I think the semi-main stole the show.

  • Victory promo from Finlay, after some of the crowd do chant his name. Somehow Tsuji always pushes him to his limit, but today Finlay was the better man. The G1 didn’t start the way Finlay wanted it to, but we’re now witnessing the greatest comeback in G1 history. (crowd cheers, Finlay chant again) Everyone’s wondering who’ll win the G1, it’s (he runs through his nicknames). Turns it over to Gedo to finish it off.

  • Gedo cuts a similar promo in Japanese. Da Rebel take the fuckin over everything. Gedo needa Rebel, New Japan needa Rebel, and da woooorld needa Rebel.

  • Finlay poses on the turnbuckle and leads the crowd in a brief bark session.

  • Next/Final Block Matches: Finlay vs Yuya, Tsuji vs Callum
