Satoshi Kojima, Taichi def
Shoma Kato, YOSHI-HASHI — (7:02, Lariat)
-
YH was slightly in the camera shot during Taichi’s entrance performance, and Taichi literally waved him out of the way which made YH sulk in the corner for a minute.
-
Post-entrances, Shoma Kato steps up and starts yelling at Taichi; eventually he agrees to start.
-
Pretty fun, largely due to the interactions between the old Kojimagun members.
-
Post match, Taichi paces around the outside until finally coming back in. Kojima offers a handshake. Taichi considers itfor a bit, but then turns around and leaves.
Yoshinobu Kanemaru, Yujiro Takahashi, Ren Narita, SANADA def
Jado, El Phantasmo, Toru Yano, Boltin Oleg — (6:45, Knee Bar)
-
ELP puts his glasses on Boltin during his entrance announcement, and seconds later HoT pounce; surely jealous of the premium color-changing LED shades that you can purchase if you’re attending any of the remaining G1 shows.
-
Yuj keeps ELP in the ring while everyone else goes to the outside.
-
Hot Shenanigans level: moderate, but all within the ring.
-
There were a couple of minutes of Boltin and SANADA in the middle of this that were really good.
-
Post match, HoT just kind of stood around awkwardly while the faces left. Like I was legit wondering if maybe the face team all forgot there was supposed to be a post-match angle; though I don’t think that’s what actually happened.
Jakob Austin Young, Callum Newman, Great-O-Khan def
Katsuya Murashima, Yuya Uemura, Hiroshi Tanahashi — (8:37, Diving Foot Stomp)
-
Callum has altered his nickname and is just “The Prince.” Maybe a little too on the nose considering he’s obviously taken a lot of inspiration from Prince Devitt lately.
-
If you missed the AEW Dynamite news, Tanahashi’s last UK match is as part of Team Ospreay in a Lights Out Cage Match; along with Darby Allin, Kenny, and Ibushi vs Mox, Claudio, Gabe, and the Bucks.
-
Callum plays around with Yuya during his entrance, mocking how he thinks Yuya’s Sun pose looks like he’s asking for a hug.
-
Post-entrances everyone stands off. GOK and Tana are the ones who end up indicating to their teammates that they want to start.
-
Yeah, let’s just let UE lean heel again. Or split them up so those who’ll thrive as heels can do so elsewhere.
-
Post match, there’s a little staredown between the teams as Yuya and Tana help Mutashima out of the ring. Once he’s out, Callum chucks an ice pack right onto him.
Taiji Ishimori, Drilla Moloney def
Daiki Nagai, Shingo Takagi — (7:40, Bone Lock)
-
Nagai starts a pec popping contest with Ishimori and Drilla, the calls Ishimori out to start.
-
Worth watching. Drilla and Shingo basically picked up where they left off last night. Towards the end Drilla legit had to check to see if he lost/was in the process of losing a tooth (did not appear to be).
-
Ishimori felt he had to cheat (low blow) to beat Nagai.
-
Post match, Shingo and Drilla taunted each other in Japanese.
-
In his Backstage Comments, Shingo calls out Gabe Kidd for being healthy enough to be announced for Forbidden Door but not to be on these shows as an NJPW Champion.
DOUKI, Don Fale, EVIL[w/Dick Togo] def
Hartley Jackson, Ryohei Oiwa, Zack Sabre Jr. — (7:05, Elbow Drop)
-
During his entrance announcement, Zack holds up the title and gets right in EVIL’s face.
-
The House wait until TMDK are just about ready to start to jump them. DOUKI and Oiwa are left in the ring.
-
Hot Shenanigans level: high. Lots of pipe.
-
Towards the end of the match, EVIL takes Zack into the stands and they exchange submissions. EVIL ends the exchange with a low blow and then assaults a YL. (Speaking of, I don’t think I’ve seen Aaron Wolf at ringside tonight?). EVIL then goes to the ring and holds up the WHC.
-
Zack grabs/dons a bunch of chairs and runs after the House.
G1 Quarterfinal: KONOSUKE TAKESHITA[w/Rocky Romero] (B3) def
David Finlay[w/Gedo] (A2) — (17:12, Raging Fire)
-
Pre-lockup crowd poll is started by a TAKE fan, but the Finlays overtake them.
-
Finlay starts with the dirty tactics early, bringing TAKE to the outside and setting up some tables.
-
Pretty fucking excellent.
-
Who do I have to speak to about committing to face Finlay/War Dogs? I’m not saying abandon what got them the love, just make them like 20% more respectful and we’re printing even more money.
-
Post match, TAKE is visibly emotional as he stares down Finlay while he rolls out of the ring. Finlay then sits against the ringside railing for a minute, looking up at TAKE as he celebrates, before leaving.
-
TAKE faces ZSJ in the semis.
G1 Quarterfinal: Yota Tsuji[w/Daiki Nagai] (A3) def
Shota Umino (B2) — (28:18, Gene Blaster)
-
Tsuji disrobes before reaching the ring to reveal his big match trunks, last seen during the draw with Gabe Kidd.
-
Shota is focused enough to skip all fanservice. After his entrance, Tsuji gestures him to the middle of the ring for a very brief staredown.
-
Pre-lockup crowd poll between “Yota” and “Shota” is always really hard to discern; I think the Yotas were louder.
-
Yeah, the kids are alright. Shota worked the STF a lot in the beginning and I think segments of that were maybe just a tad slow, but that’s a nitpick. Tsuji used excursion mentor Ultimo Guerrero’s Guerrero Special in the finishing sequence.
-
Tsuji promo. He doesn’t quite know what Umino’s Second Chapter is all about. But he knows that Shota needs believe in himself and keep moving forwards. It isn’t about choosing the right path, it’s about finding Shota’s unique path. And if you keep your individuality, you’ll be among the best. I know you have to be up at the top with me, and I know we’ll have to do this again. (Shota leaves.) I have chosen my own path, forged my own way, and I believe in myself and in NJPW. I have chosen this life, and I put myself on the line every time I step into the cerulean blue, and when I say “Are you ready?” I’m also talking to myself. New Japan has seemingly entered a new era, but true change hasn’t come yet. So now, I’ll say it again; are you ready? I will carry New Japan Pro Wrestling.
-
As he’s leaving, Tsuji steps over the railing to stand right in front of Tanahashi (on Japanese comms).
-

Glad that Tsuji won, hoping he goes all the way and wins the G1.
Is it just me, or was that main event REALLY one sided? Shota got some spots in, but I feel like that was 25+ minutes of Tsuji laying smackdown
I think I’ve come around on the yuya booking to a degree but it’s very dependent on them pulling the trigger on tsuji
One of them just has to be established as the highest ranked of them in this moment. This will then create conflict as the others battle to drag him down
So it’s going to be Take vs Tsuji in the finals. Does Tsuji go 0-2 in g1 finals or does he get the WK main event.
Both quarterfinals matches ruled.
Shota’s come away from this G1 significantly better than he did last year, looking forward to seeing where he goes next.
Tsuji continues to have HIM energy, love that the trunks are his “big match” gear.
Oh wow I just realized they’re doing a G1 rematch from last year this time Tsuji wins then they probably do ZSJ vs Tsuji III at the dome lmao
I hope they go all in on Evil and have him win it all and beat Zack a month later. We need a dominant heel in the WK main event.
Well, we know our final fellas. We all knew we were likely heading anyway but now it’s all but certain. Even if it’s predictable, it just has to be Tsuji vs Takeshita – it’s just right. I will say though, Umino and Tsuji did a damn fine job of keeping it up in the air and I was actually second guessing myself at points thinking Umino would win. That gene blast kick out was genuinely a fantastic false finish, it really got me. Despite the match being almost half an hour, I actually think they managed to save a lot of juice for future matches here as both men seemed to use their move sets quite sparingly I thought. I really like their chemistry to be honest but it’s also smart to keep them separate as much as possible so the matches they do have feel bigger like this one did. My only criticism is that I think the actual finish was slightly rushed which seems mental to say about a 28 minute QUARTER FINAL match but after the great false finish Tsuji just basically hit him with another gene blast. They could’ve gone for an amazing finishing sequence if they wanted to imo. Take vs Finlay was also great to the surprise of absolutely nobody. I can forgive the Uemura booking IF/WHEN Tsuji and Take overcome EVIL and Zack and have a 35 minute classic in the final. Still think Takeshita is winning but it’s honestly as 50/50 as it gets right now.
PS. Yota looks WAY better in that ring gear, I’m glad he’s finally brought it back.
Welp, Tsuji’s winning this. The only other realistic option was Shota.
It’s Uminover… (Again)
So Tsuji is absolutely winning the G1 right? Him and Takeshita in the finals, Takeshita getting a title match maybe at forbidden door for being ZSJ in the semi’s?
Tsuji beating Evil, Takeshita beating Zack and Tsuji winning the G1 feels guaranteed to me. Zack defending va Takeshita at Forbidden door would also make sense.
Well… gonna be interesting to see where Shota goes from here. Tsuji was the correct choice, however I can’t help but feel a bit of sympathy for Shota.
I genuinely wonder what this second chapter thing is all about. He really hasn’t gotten any real significant wins out of it yet, though he got to the playoff stage.
Kinda an interesting spot to be in
Come on guys. We all know president EVIL is winning the G1. It’s just a given at this point.
I know you saw my post ranting on Uemura so I just wanted to thank you for doing these writeups so I can still keep up to date with the tournament.
Fuming about today’s results really pissed me off, honestly can’t believe Fale pinned big jag wadda hell.
G1 results are all good tho.
On your point about Finlay.
If the feud with House of Torture was anything to show is that crowds can get behind the War Dogs. I understand New Japan probably wants to keep Finlay a heel so there is a heel outside the House.
But like you’ve said: His strength lie in him being a babyface. Same with Kidd, Drilla and Clark. Why not turn them babyface while letting them keep their edge.
If you want another heel group, just make a new one
I have start to feel tired of Tsuji during this G1, feeling he is not the one who should lead the company forward (that’s obviously Yuya), but that was really really good
The UE/Hontai tag had an AWESOME comedy spot in the middle.
>! Tana, Uemura and Murashima all hit consecutive rolling sentons on GOK and do Tana’s air guitar celebration. UE regroup and eject Tana/Uemura… leaving Murashima merrily air guitaring away for several seconds as UE give him the “wotta maroon” stares until attacking him as well. 😆😆😆 !<
Tsuji vs Take finals with Yota winning is pretty obvious to me. And it is the dream
