Totally Random Question about ZYNs and the PX stores

Had my last batch of ZYNs confiscated by Australian Border Force — can I buy them at the US PX in Okinawa?

My shipment of 20 tins got taken by Border Force before I left Australia (they’re legal to possess but not to sell and I’m not sure if they took them or just held them for a while). I was hoping they’d arrive before my 3-month trip to Japan but alas they didn’t.

I’m in Ishigaki at the moment and heading to Naha on Sunday for five days. Does anyone know if the US PX stores in Okinawa sell ZYNs? And if they do, are civilians allowed access to buy things?

I’m ex-Australian defence force, though I’m guessing that doesn’t mean much here, but I do have my Veterans’ Affairs card with me if that helps at all.

Any info appreciated!

  1. I’ve seen Zyn in Camp Kinser.
Unsure about other bases but I assume they also have it.

Edit: I have no idea how civilians gain access to the base though, I heard visitor passes exist but idk how to obtain them.

  2. Unless you have some connection with the military (active duty, dependent, DOD civilian, contractor, on orders) you won’t have access to base on your own. You’ll have to get someone to sponsor you onto the base. Then you still won’t have access to the PX/commissary. If you do make it on base, you will have access to the eating establishments which might carry them as a convenience item.

The other option is if you can find someone to “gift” it to you, but depending on the circumstances, that could be perceived as black marketing.
