Do you recommend it? Can you still play the games in English? I can read Japanese and I’m probably comfortable navigating the user interface in Japanese. I’m just concerned with playing the games in Japanese.

If you were able to play the games in English it would defeat the whole purpose of the model….
I bought it in Japan, I switched language to English for the interface after first boot.
For the games, depends on the game. If you buy the Japanese version of the game, most games have both languages nowdays (you can change from menu). This stands for both digital games and not.
However some games are Japanese only if you buy the Japanese edition. One example would be Elden ring.
You can just switch the store to your country, and you will get the games from your region. I am connected to the EU ps store so all my games are in English.
For the discs, i check if they have both languages on the playstation official website before buying. If they are Japanese only I buy the digital version from the EU store.
yeah I bought the PS5 disc edition from Yamada Denki in Yokohama. Now living in Canada again. Never had an issue. Everything is in English on mine.

Not on the system level, no. If the game has in-game language changing, yes.
