Parallel Train Connections

Sometimes, when luck enough, I’ll be aware that a parallel train is across the way from my train going the same speed. I sometimes feel connected to the other people on that train. Once, I smiled and waved at an old woman who smiled and waved back. Am I alone in this magical moment?

  1. I remember this past summer i was on the metro waiting for the train to start moving, and on the opposite platform there was this kid no older than like 7 making faces at me, so I naturally I accepted their challenge and started making faces back too. The fun came to an end when my doors ended up closing and we waved by to each other.

Life is made of Small Moments like that 😊

  2. I like it too, and I was wondering how do i know where and when there will be parallel trains

  3. I feel the same thing too!

Another thing I’ve thought about a lot was when I used to walk on the riverbank under a shinkansen bridge. I was totally alone out there, and then suddenly accompanied by a massive crowd of people, and then within seconds totally alone again. Hundreds of people would pass mere meters above my head, but these people, despite their close proximity to me, were as completely inaccessible to me as people in a city far away. Was I alone the whole time or was I not?

  4. Never really got the courage to wave or smile at the people in the parallel train, but I do look and wonder what they are up to and how their day was then I realize I will likely never see them again. Weird feeling. Similar to ‘sonder’ from the dictionary of obsure sorrows.

  5. Not parallel trains, but with a house.
Was on a local train in Tochigi. We stopped at a station to wait for a passing train. In a house nearby a small boy was looking out of the window and starting waving, so I waved back. Soon after the rest of the carriage noticed what I was doing and also started waving. It ended up with the entire carriage waving at this boy who was having the time of his life.

The best part was when his mother (who was hanging up laundry) noticed what was going on and burst out laughing.

  6. You’re not alone. I do similar things constantly. My spouse tolerates it, but our near-teen finds it embarrassing.
