Post Covid life changes? I started a restaurant pop-up

I’ve always loved cooking and I needed a new challenge after working online during the pandemic. Luckily there’s places you can rent 間借り style in Kyoto so it was quite easy. No liquor licenses or Indy needed. This would be such a hassle in Canada. It’s been 3.5 years! I also hold DJ events.

  1. Congrats! I have no idea if we have anything like that here. You presumably still need a food handling license, right?

What does Indy mean here? Is it some kind of employment/company status? Insurance? A city in Indiana, USA? I’ve never seen that term before.

  2. I opened a small karaoke bar in Sapporo after COVID. Completely changed my life.

While I did need to obtain some licenses, it was far more attainable to open a tiny bar here compared to Canada.

I’ve been open for about 3.5 years now, too. After the uncertainty of COVID (and working remotely for so long), the timing felt right to pursue the dream. I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to do so.

Hospitality and self-employment is A LOT of work, but it’s amazing to actually be able to do it.
Wishing you & your business all the best. If I ever take a day off, maybe I’ll head to Kyoto to check out the local scene down there!

  3. Making music! Bought a bunch of gear right before Covid and staved off corona cabin fever writing songs.

  4. I got hit by a car, spent about 3 months in the hospital, lost most of the use of 1 arm, had 4 of my 5 immediate family members die within 2 years, wait do you mean positive life changes?

  5. I opened a cafe with the other half called Day Off Coffee in Tokyo. We open a few Sundays a month and are gluten and white sugar free! Speciality hand drip coffee place for those interested in Japanese roaster coffee

  6. I hold DJ events too and sometimes help book artists from overseas. And DJ myself too, flying overseas every few months. It’s nice to have the world open and free again.
