
American doggu (Midnight Diner s04e02) and yamitsuki kyabetsu.
The episode title on Netflix calls these "corn dogs", but there is no cornmeal in the batter, only wheat flour, and the Japanese name is アメリカンドッグ, "American doggu".
I made some with pork hot dogs (yum) and some with gyoniku soseji, fish sausage (…less yum, imho). The breading fries up lighter and more smoothly-textured than cornmeal batter, though it's less robust and didn't hold up well on the leftovers.
The cabbage immediately became one of my favorite cabbage preparations. Super easy, and really tasty! Recipe here.
(Re: the cheese–I read in multiple places that it's a common snack at izakaya, but I didn't see it being served anywhere, myself. Were those sources incorrect?)
