Cinnamon buns in Kyoto, I’m baking!

Something crazy happened today. I'm from the nordics and have been traveling for almost a year now, slowly moving though one city at a time. I really miss cinnamon buns, sourdough bread and dark bread with whole grains.

I plan on staying in Japan for three months, mostly in Kyoto. I've been here for three weeks already and today I found this tiny cafe that sells sourdough sandwiches and banana muffins. I ended up talking with the owner and telling her about my longing for baked goods in my country. I'm a pretty good baker but you can't find a place to stay in Japan that has an oven and you can't easily get fresh yeast. So the owner invited me to come by the cafe again next week and use the kitchen to bake cinnamon buns!

This is such a crazy thing to happen to me! I'm so excited!!

  1. What an amazing opportunity! Lemme know if yall cook up some sourdough, I’m missing it like crazy 😭

  2. I know it’s not quite the same as “artisanal” cinnamon buns but there’s a Cinnabon in Osaka. And a lot of Kyoto bakeries do make cinnamon buns too, but I often find them too dry, so I’m not even sure where I would go for real cinnamon buns…

  3. Ok, I’ll bite.
It’s Shio Veg Cafe and … you are baking cinnamon buns.. when exactly? And are you baking them for everybody? Can we stop by and get some too?
Congrats on this great Kyoto adventure!

  4. Living in Japan for 11 years now and I’m often sad about how hard it is get the right kind of cinnamon bun here(I know everyone’s right kind is different) I don’t want the apple slices, I don’t want the walnuts or almonds, I don’t even want the cream cheese topping. Simple, proper cinnamon, with no topping or just royal icing, the only place around here that have them are always sold out so I know other people enjoy them too.
I of course bake them myself now and then, but every other baked goods is available everywhere it seems, why not cinnamon buns?

  5. I think good cinnamon buns is one of the few reasons I would even consider going to Kyoto. Or some fresh newly picked and sun warm raspberries..
(Ikeas garbage buns can burn in hell.)
