Hey everyone! I’m planning a 9 day Japan trip in July and would love some advice.
A few things I’d appreciate help with:
– Must-visit cities and how to split days between them
– Places worth covering beyond the usual Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka route
– Any hidden gems or local experiences you’d recommend
– JR Pass – still worth it or skip?
First time visiting, so open to all kinds of suggestions.
Thanks in advance!

I’m going In July as well.
I know with the heat I will have to reduce the amount I can travel/walk in a day compared to my last trip in April a couple years ago
I picked up a neckfan and t-shirt fan on Amazon, I’ll use the wnck fan atleast but will be nice to have the other on top of cooling towels.
I’m planning on going down to Hiroshima for a few days and the cost of a Shinkansen there and back is still cheaper than the jr pass.
Another option I was considering was renting a car out of Tokyo and exploring a few areas for a few nights, rentals don’t seem too bad if you can get an international driving permit and translation done in time.
Is that the only time you can go?
I was there last week and its already hot and uncomfortable during the day. But i would throw in Hakone for some onsen 😉
My first trip was 10 days and the worst part was switching hotels. I went to Tokyo and Kyoto and wish I just got one hotel in Tokyo and one in Kyoto, or stayed in Tokyo the whole time. I wasted so much time travelling and hauling luggage.
Going on my second trip soon and I decided to stay in the same hotel in Tokyo my whole trip, then take small day trips 1-2 hrs outside the city for when I want to get away. I wouldnt push yourself to see multiple cities in 9 days unless you are a very experienced and energetic traveller. Tokyo and Kyoto are both massive with plenty to see for your whole trip.
If you can’t change the dates from July, pick indoor activities or have a very laidback itinerary
These questions are pretty basic. Take a look at Japan Guide for some hints
Bring light clothing for rain. I went in the beginning of July a while ago and it was very wet and windy. It’s the rain season during June to July.
This is being asked every single day about 5 times. Use the search function or just scroll down for 2min
Here’s my trip report from last August which might be useful
