Hi all, I bought a car and the dealer did the mandatory insurance that protects other people, but I want the voluntary one that protects me and the car. They gave me a quote separately for the voluntary insurance but it was around 170k. I said no to that because the ones I checked online were all around 100k. The problem is, the ones online include both mandatory and voluntary, whereas I just want the voluntary alone. Are there any companies that only do the voluntary insurance? I’d appreciate any recommendations. Thank you!
Edit: Or, would it be better to buy the mix insurance and have additional cover, as perhaps the mandatory insurance the dealer did wouldn’t cover high costs?

Y170,000 a year? Even Y100,000 a year seems insanely expensive. Are you very young? Like, under 25?
You are also more likely to get cheaper insurance that isn’t through the dealer.
I currently pay Y16,000 a year for insurance; mandatory + voluntary, covers my wife, myself and anyone else that drives the car if they’re 35 years or older. Unlimited payout for death and property damage if I’m in an accident, plus payouts for anyone in my car if they are injured or killed, and of course payouts for the driver.
Note that I do NOT have insurance payout for the car; we bought used and will just buy another used car or cash flow any repairs if needed. But even adding some insurance on the car itself would only make the annual cost rise to like Y19,000. I have no idea what insurance you’re being offered that’s 170,000 a year.

I didn’t look much into detail, but you need to consider the third party insurance should be “unlimited”. Imagine you hit a lambo, you wouldn’t want to pay any portion out of your own pocket. So that’s the biggest concern. Then protect your car to a reasonable amount. You can save some money if you limit the drivers, the kms you’d drive in the year, etc. I paid about 65k yen with AXA direct for a new car worth 3.3M.
I use JA insurance. Pay ¥5060 per month. Level 14 on the Japanese scale of 0~20. Drive a Kei truck. Blue license. Fully covered insurance, including lawyer fees.
