I’m moving back to japan in september and realized that the my number card is basically essential for me to make a bank account (I’m not a foreigner so I won’t have a residence card and I don’t have a japanese drivers license) but it says on the website that it takes one month for the card to be made, meaning that I will have to spend one month without a bank account…..but I’m wondering what the current wait times are like? (for reference I’m going to be applying in shinjuku which I believe is one of the busier wards)

**How long is the my number card wait time?**

Which bank requires it? SMBC, for example, [only needs your passport](https://www.smbc.co.jp/kojin/open-account/).
Even if they require your mynumber you can provide it in form of a juminhyo. The card is not required, just proof of the number. When I got my card it took around 1 month. 2 weeks for the card to be made then I had to wait 2 weeks for a slot to pick it up.
Recently took my husband about a month to have the card made.
Are you sure you need the card? You can give them the number without the card. And honestly the my number card adoption is slow going so I can’t imagine banks requiring one to open an account— the number maybe, but not the card.
