Leaving a bad review for previous employer

I recently quit my job at an eikaiwa and long story short, I had a miserable experience there. I couldn’t believe that the school has no bad reviews from previous employees online especially since turnover is so high. Until a coworker told me it’s because the boss somehow gets the bad ones removed from glassdoor and gets friends to leave good reviews boosting their rating.

I want to leave an honest review online to warn other teachers away from this place. But could there be any legal repercussions of doing that? The previous country I taught in was very strict about anyone leaving negative reviews about a business online and I have noticed on this thread people are hesitant to name schools where they had a bad experience. Am I (legally) okay to put this place on blast like they deserve?

  1. Telling the truth isn’t protection from a libel case in Japan. It’s likely that your previous employer threatened to sue those who left negative reviews.

  2. Just post it. It’s not like they would be able to read English, let alone use the internet well enough to find your reddit post.

  3. >退職した会社に対するネガティブな批評

    >転職サイトへの口コミ投稿であれば転職者にとって有益な情報と判断され、公共性・公益性が認められる可能性が高いでしょう。

    >一方で「転職者の役に立つ」といった役割のない掲示板サイトなどで、単なる誹謗中傷として投稿した場合は信用毀損罪が成立する余地があります。

    >Negative criticism of the company you left.

    >If it is a word-of-mouth posting on a job search website, it is likely to be judged as useful information for job seekers and recognized as being of a public nature and in the public interest.

    >On the other hand, if the information is posted as mere slander on a bulletin board site that does not serve the purpose of “being useful to job seekers,” there is room for a charge of defamation of credibility.

This is an opinion of a lawyer specialized in IT related lawsuit.
Basically it is ok if it is actually useful negative reviews on reviews sites for job seekers, while if it is insults on random SNS/BBS not particularly made for reviews, there is room for 信用棄損罪.

Don’t post on reddit and use reviews sites. Also don’t insult particular individuals using their name.

  4. You have to be very careful. Slander rules here put the burden of proof on you. Even saying truthful things can get you sued. So the wording has to be constructive and objectively helpful to the public (not just ranting or shaming).

  5. You could potentially get some heat for that, especially if the owner is an asshole like that. I was in a similar situation last year, and the honest (not overly negative) review I left on GD was removed quickly.

  6. Make a burner account at Glassdoor, write your honest review and be sure to ad that you are afraid of repercussions, also explain that probably the school owner will be able to pull it down.

If that happens, post it again with the “as expected….”

  7. This subreddit is shit because it wont allow you to name and shame school without some sort of “evidence” that is subjective to their requirements, as if your personal experience wasn’t enough. I am thinking about making a subreddit to pass around without limits the places that are shit and the places that are good to work.

You need to name and shame these schools and tell people how they run, because Tozen and other unions wont do anything about it, the only way to stop these practices are to make it public and spread the word about how these schools are terrible.

  8. I’ve left reviews, and nothing happened to me. I listed the good and bad points and tried to be unbiased.
